Law Explorers

The Culpeper Police Department’s Law Enforcement Explorer program provides young adults with the knowledge of the law enforcement function in their community and it gives them an idea of day-to-day police operations. Involvement in the Explorer program establishes an awareness of the complexities of police service. Explorers are volunteers and not sworn officers.

Learning for Life

The Explorer Program is a "Learning for Life" career education program which is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America. Members of our Explorer program learn about respect, responsibility, honesty, trust, caring, fairness, perseverance, self-discipline, courage, citizenship, and life skills. The positive character traits and skills learned by our Explorers not only make them more confident and capable, but also give them an invaluable understanding of how things work in the real world. Our Explorer program is not only a great introduction to the law enforcement career but to the world at large.

As part of their orientation, Explorers learn traffic control and radio communications and are issued a uniform and equipment. Afterwards, they are ready to start riding along with on-duty officers and attending special events. At each meeting, Explorers learn about different careers in law enforcement, the justice system, and aspects of an officer’s duties. They practice conducting traffic stops, self-defense, evidence collection, investigations, and more. There are also ranks within the Explorer program. Advancement involves experience with the program, a test, an oral panel interview, and a vote from the Explorers themselves.
